DARK DUBLIN

DARK DUBLIN

(in parallel with the Bram Stoker Festival)

Dublin was a city of distress for many centuries and countless ghoulish events have taken place there. Ancient rites, bodysnatching, murders, rebellions, tortures, imprisonments. hangings, assassinations, wars, alleged hauntings and pestilences have all left their marks on our cultural heritage and on generations of storytellers. It’s no coincidence that the greatest author of gothic horror tales, Bram Stoker, was a born and bred Dubliner. Join us for a perambulation through all this dreadfulness – if you dare!

Take a Closer Look

Bram Stoker may arguably be the most famous Irish writer internationally, perhaps even outmatching James Joyce – but that is another argument altogether. Bram, building on the works of previous Irish horror writers, gave us the seminal gothic tale of Dracula, a tale of devilishness that has captured the imagination of the world like no other work of fiction ever has. This walk will explore the work of Stoker in the context of his own time and the influence of the thousands of years of Irish stories of evil spirits and our precarious relationship with the Underworld. The troubled history of Dublin, through a 1,000 years of foreign occupation, inevitably left a trail of blood-letting, fear, suffering and persecution which only added to layers of darkness and nefarious goings-on. We will revel in the works of Stoker’s predecessors including luminaries such as Charles Maturin, Joeseph Sheridan le Fanu, and Oscar Wilde who presented their own versions of the Other World.
